Examples of successful cycling infrastructure: the pedestrian and bicycle tunnel through the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

A cycle path that passes through a museum: Amsterdam, of course, has exactly that. This cycle path allows pedestrians and cyclists a shortcut across the city and was closed for ten years as the Rijksmuseum underwent an extensive renovation. It was reopened in May 2013 to great public interest.

The passage is used by both cyclists and pedestrians. Prior to the renovation, visitors could not enter the museum from the underpass. Now that this is possible, the passage tends to be particularly crowded at visitor peak times. To ensure road safety, scooters and mopeds are not permitted to access the underpass: this ban is enforced with CCTV.
