Learn all about Dutch Cycling Infrastructure Design
This training will equip you with a solid set of technical and policy-making skills for developing cycling policy and planning cycling infrastructure.
One of the most renowned manuals for cycling infrastructure design is the Cycling Design Manual. This manual was edited by DTV Consultants and published by the Dutch CROW institute – leading institute for infrastructure design. It is based on decades of research into Dutch cycling policy and infrastructure development. The manual is relevant for both starting and mature cyclist infrastructure designers. It comprises a step-by-step guide for developing a cycling policy and creating safe infrastructure designs.
DTV Consultants – with more than 25 years of experience in delivering training courses and professional education – has put together a unique training course aimed at professionals in cycling policy and cycling infrastructure planning. This five-day course will teach you how to apply the CROW Cycling Design Manual to your situation. Moreover, we will teach you to develop cycling policy and infrastructure.
For this training, experts in various disciplines such as policy-making, planning, design, and safety have been brought together.

After graduating from the Dutch Academy of Traffic Hillie started working as a researcher at the Delft University. Later she was a Traffic Policy Official for the cities The Hague and Ede for several years. Hillie now works for CROW an NGO and non-profit organisation in the field of traffic, transportation, civil engineering and public space. Here she is responsible for the (international) bicycle projects and parking projects. One of the best known books she produced is the Design Manual for Bicycle Traffic.
Paul van den Bosch
Paul van den Bosch has been a with DTV Consultants since 2005 and specialises in cycling mobility and road safety. He has carried out many practical and innovative projects for small, medium, and large cities. Examples of his work include developing a cost-benefit tool for cycling infrastructure, designing cycling reward schemes, creating black spot analyses, and conducting a thorough review/thorough reviews of cycling infrastructure designs. Paul is also a skilled road safety auditor and spends his spare time riding both on- and off-trail as a passionate cyclist.
Paul van de Coevering
NHTV’s research group Urban Intelligence focuses on the optimisation of multimodal trips for cycling, public, and car transport, as well as the relationship between traffic networks and built-upon areas. The group has developed insights and tools to support (political) decision-makers and designers in the development of cycling policies, networks, and infrastructure design. Course participants will get to visit the Urban Intelligence group and experience the thrills of using an actual VR cycle simulator.
Wim Bot has been international public affairs officer at the Dutch Cylists’ Union since 2008. Wim is a self-proclaimed political animal, and his mission is to advance the importance of cycling on the national Dutch agenda. As national and international affairs officer at the Dutch Cyclists’ Union, Wim has presented at many conferences around the globe and campaigned for better cycling conditions in the Netherlands. While building a cyclists’ paradise requires hard work, a clear vision, and a bit of defiance, Wim maintains his view that keeping the Netherlands a cycling utopia is a doable and worthwhile goal.
When and where
The provisional outline of the course is as follows and remains subject to change. The programme is designed on the concept of action learning. Concepts are explained by experienced trainers and guest speakers and supported by practical examples, observed in field trips, and applied in exercises. Field trips consist of visits to and observations in the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Breda.

June: Overall you can expect quite a bit of sunshine, with lots of blue skies and a normal average temperature of 15° C (59° F) — and daytime highs of 19-20° C (66.2-68° F).
Mind you, the Dutch grew up with this more of less standard weather forecast for this time of the year: In the morning sunshine and here and there’ some rain; in the afternoon sunshine with now and then a shower.
