Dutch Bicycle Infrastructure Training 2025

The course provided an in-depth understanding of sustainability and safety in urban planning, which are crucial in today's rapidly urbanizing world.

DTV and Go-bility did a Fantastic job and a very good organisation of the bicycle training during the entire week. Very good programm with lecture, technical tools, bike tour in different Dutch cities, personnel work, exchange with different people. Very intense week and inspiring experience. Thank you for everything you shared with us.

The Dutch bicycle infrastructure training course was an incredible experience to not only see/ride all the different infrastructure functioning but to also learn about the challenges the Dutch have had and are also currently facing when implementing bicycle infrastructure. Meeting other participants and learning what has been working and not working in their countries was also invaluable! Teije and the other presenters were very knowledgeable and provided many insights on how Dutch bicycle infrastructure could be translated into other parts of the world.

It was a great course to understand and dive into Dutch cycling infrastructure! Very interactive and engaging teaching with lots of local city visit to understand the theories. It was inspiring to see guest lectures provide insightful and interesting information. Overall a great course that allows participants to understand the theory and apply it during the case study presentation. Thank you for all the great fun and learning!

I was surprised how much I learnt and how it has changed how I think of cycling infrastructure.

The course offers all around coverage of fundamental technical and philosophical approaches to cycling infrastructure and ensures access to experts from various disciplines and walks of life that are relevant to cycling subjects.

Learning bycycle infraestrure from DTV and the Dutch is definitely the best way to do it. They have years of experience and have tried many different solutions that now are proven and written on books. I recomend to get the Crow book also.

This course was an informative, practical, and entertaining way of learning about how the Dutch have rebuilt their societies and neighbourhoods so that they are for people, not traffic. We saw how the Dutch have an excellent quality of life, their children have independence, and how everyone of any age and ability can move around and between cities, towns and villages safely and conveniently on impressive infrastructure. I highly recommend this course.

This course is a great way to understand the Dutch way of planning and designing bike facilities, with the context of how it evolved. It provides insights for all bike planners and policy developers seeking to improve their city. I certainly hope to use this to influence how we cater for bike riders back home.

I took this course and I am an Italian urban planner but I would recommend the course to anyone who is passionate about cycling. Regardless of the continent / city of origin and the role he covers in the workplace. During the course you will be able to immerse yourself in the world of Dutch cycling to learn the fundamental principles of cycling, pedaling on Dutch infrastructure, understanding its mechanisms and learning about the transition process that took place in Holland to get to the cities they have today. A beautiful and intense 5 day experience!

I recommend the DTV course to those who want to implement cycling in their cities.

I wanted to learn 'the gold standard' for bicycle network design and infrastructure. I found the training through Teije's twitter and saw that it was endorsed/supported by Dutch Cycling Embassy so I was convinced it was a legitimate and credible training (having never heard of DTV prior).

The training provides an intense, stimulating, and through dive into the world of bicycle networks/infrastructure but stresses the importance of taking a systems approach to these networks. I also doubt you would be able to meet the world leaders in cycle planning and design that are part of the programme and get such great tours of cycle infrastructure in Breda, Utrecht, and Rotterdam.

I would deinititely recommend this course to either infrastructure professionals in order to deepen into expertise and also to advocates/juniors for approaching cycling infrastructure for all its diferent aspects and angles.

And... Great suprise was having a bike for our personal use during all the week!

The course was excellent. In particular, the depth of the information about the context for Dutch bicycle infrastructure design – road function, and sustainable safety. Learning to understand these concepts and how they are applied has been invaluable. The course structure was very practical, enabling us to apply what we learned as we progressed. The insightful critique of my project presentation really helped me to make the most of what we were learning and to apply it properly. I found the variety of speakers and learning methods, including the site visits and rides, excellent for making the information real and absorbable. I also enjoyed learning from and working with fellow students from around the world. I would highly recommend this course for those interested in understanding the principles and application of Dutch bicycle infrastructure design.

Why did you pick this training?
I learned from many books and web sites that the Dutch lead the world in cycling rates and safety. So about a year ago I Googled “Netherlands cycling infrastructure training” and DTV Capacity Building appeared at the top of the list.

What was your favorite part of the training?
I appreciated and enjoyed and discovered value in all aspects of the training. I found that experiencing the infrastructure first hand is perhaps the most powerful tool available to DTV Capacity Building. The indoor/classroom work is necessary, but nothing is more convincing or more powerful to a foreigner than simply exploring, discovering, observing, and discussing the infrastructure while you are experiencing it. The bike tours with the various instructors in Breda and Rotterdam were my favorite.

DTV ensures that trainees leave the program with a firm grasp of the critical success factors for cycling infrastructure that appeals to all ages and abilities. The Netherlands is a showcase of the world’s largest inventory of “complete streets” (the popular American term). Make the most of that unrivaled laboratory!

Were there any unexpected experiences or surprises?
I did not expect to learn so much about the “critical success factors” of network planning. I learned how important the fundamentals of network planning/design are, and that this is the foundation of all other elements of cycling infrastructure design.

I recommend the training because DTV delivers on all counts. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, open-minded, patient, well-organized and enthusiastic. They also understand the challenges of adapting auto-oriented cities for cycling. DTV ensures that trainees leave the program with a firm grasp of the critical success factors for cycling infrastructure that appeals to all ages and abilities. Thanks to DTV, I can apply the CROW Design Manual for Cycling Traffic with confidence to my local conditions.
